Summary

To study the applicability of IR-sensors in an outdoor environment detailed knowledge in needed about the atmospheric longwave radiance. For this purpose an IR-scanning radiometer has been developed, able to measure the IR-radiance of the sky-hemisphere. The sensor measures the radiance of 59 sample elements in four wavelength bands in 3 minutes. Due to inside calibration no external reference sources are needed. Illustrative examples of the angular radiance distribution are given for two wavelengths bands, i.e. λ > 3 μm and 8 < λ < 14 μm.
