Summary
The existing theory of peak shapes in non-ideal, linear chromatography (the most realistic cathegory of chromatographic systems), contains several inconsistencies and discrepancies. In this work, several assumptions and boundary conditions for the solution of the applicable mass-balance equations are compared and the proper conditions are identified. Also, the confusion between the column concentration profile and the elution curve is straightened out and a general formula for the interconversion of these two representations of the chromatographic peak is presented.
The findings are applied to a general mass-balance model, which takes into account axial diffusion and two types of non-equilibrium. The statistical moments for the resulting elution curve, as well as graphical examples of curves, are calculated and compared to earlier works. This approach leads to a more logical and exact description of the shape of chromatographic peak shapes, especially in systems with a low number of theoretical plates.
