Dissociation between gastric secretion and motility

The American Journal of Digestive Diseases Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

Simultaneous gastric secretory and motor studies on 19 subjects stimulated with Histalog, 5% alcohol, and reserpine revealed an increase in the gastric secretory volume and free acid but no hypermotility of the stomach. In 10 studies the gastric motility and tonus were unaltered, and in 9 studies there was a slight decrease in amplitude of gastric contractions and tonus. There were no observable differences in motor response between patients with duodenal ulcer and those subjects with no gastro-intestinal disorder.

In 39 simultaneous gastric secretory and motor studies on 18 dogs stimulated with histamine, 5% alcohol, sham feeding, and endogenous gastrin, there was increase in the volume of gastric secretion and free acid concentration but no increase in gastric motility or tonus. Gastric activity was unaltered in 8 studies and depressed in 31. There were no detectable differences in gastric motor response to the various stimuli between the innervated and the denervated stomachs.
