Summary
In investigations of the sea surface, three different layers may be considered, the meter layer, the millimeter layer and the micrometer layer. Two techniques are presented here that have been developed by the authors for the exploration of the micrometer layer, both of which can be operated from board ship. In the sampling procedure for chlorinated hydrocarbons special care has to be taken in order to minimize errors due to contamination. The present devices enable contamination-free sampling to be undertaken, as well as allowing decontamination and extraction of samplers with the necessary solvents. The first sampler consists of a stainless steel screen of 0.13 m2 surface area supported by a metal frame. While in the stand-by position and during decontamination and extraction of the sample, the screen is placed in a container made out of chromium plated brass. In the sampling mode the screen is hung in a wooden frame which is able to float, and the complete device lowered over the bow of the ship until it just touches the sea surface. The wooden frame encloses an aluminium box-like structure which protects the sampling screen against splashing and irregular wave motion.
The second sampler consists of a ripple glass-plate of 0.12 m2 surface area which is designed to fit into the same wooden frame as the first device. During stand-by, decontamination and sample extraction, the plate is stored in a glass basin having a glass cover. The basin is supported by a wooden tray which can be mounted on a mechanical shaker.
Both sample devices behaved very satisfactorily during technical trials at sea.
