Abstract
The paper investigates the arc voltage and certain characteristics of the luminescence of a discharge in helium with a cylindrical hollow cathode in a magnetic field. Based on a comparison of the effect of a magnetic field on the electrical and optical characteristics of the discharge, the role played in the discharge mechanism by photoemission from the cathode is discussed.
