Summary
Tryptophanhydroxylase has been demonstrated in the human pineal gland. The enzyme activity was 3–6 times greater than that of homogenates from cortical areas of human brain. The presence of tryptophan hydroxylase in the pineal gland implies that this organ is not dependent on the transport of 5-hydroxytryptophan but is able to synthesize this precursor of melatonin.
