Summary
Investigations of 726 soldiers, students and technical assistants during an interepidemic period have shown that about 40% of the soldiers and 20% of both other groups harbored meningococci in their nasopharynx. In the soldiers no raise of the carrier rate was observed during the first eight weeks of training. Serological typing revealed that in soldiers type B predominated whereas in students type A was the most frequent one. 22 of the 196 strains belonged to the three types X, Y and Z, recently described bySlaterus (1961). One strain only was non-typable. In spite of the relatively high carrier rates no ease of meningococcal meningitis occurred.
