Summary
Killed pertussis organisms increase antibody production of white mice to other antigens. With this effect a strong enlargement of the spleen is connected, mainly caused by a multiplication of the cells of the red pulp. These morphological changes can also be demonstrated likewise following the injection of pertussis organisms (without a second antigen), but not after the immunization with another antigen. Besides the antibody forming cells (spleen) also increased numbers of granulocytes (blood) and megacaryocytes (spleen) are demonstrable. From these findings the conclusion is drawn that pertussis organisms represent an unspecific stimulus resulting in cell proliferation in the spleen of mice, what means that by this mechanism also increased numbers of cells are formed, out of which immunologically competent cells can differentiate.
