Summary
In the oldest taxonomical treatments ofNicotiana tabacum all known cultivars were distinguished as varieties (varietas). Comes postulated six close limited varieties, altogether representing the rows of features. Intermediate forms were regarded on the base of morphological features as hybrids of two or more varieties.
Again and again the demand is arised for an infraspecific arrangement ofNicotiana tabacum on genetical, cytological, physiological and geographical basis.
By genetists was demonstrated, that in segregations after hybridization not only intermediate forms of the parents appear, but further more entire new forms may develop. For an analysis of factors the genetist — in the same way as the taxonomist — has to reduce the resulting diversity of segregations by forming morphological groups and to attain in this manner a review.
Chromosomal differences (translocations, inversions etc.) are abundant inNicotiana tabacum. As far as all direct connections to morphological features can be pointed out, equivalent structures of chromosomes are inequal in their expressivity, therefore it is impossible to use them for classification.
Physiological characters (e. g. qualitative or quantitative contents of alcaloids) are not joined with morphological features. Diagnostically they are not available because they are varying considerable and in high grade they are dependent on environs.
In systems usual in trade only economical valuable cultivars are taken in consideration. The combination of morphological features with an appointed origin has only temporary value, because the choice of cultivars is changing permanently. The form of leaves is an important character of value. The most qualitative factors must be judged subjectively.
For a review of whole the diversity of forms features of leaves and flowers are best suitable. Some combinations of characters facilitate the classification. Cultivars, which leaves bear an acute-angled course of veins, have flowerlobes neither longer than broad, or so long as broad, or something broader than long. In cultivars with nearly rectangular branched veins the flowerlobes are broader than long or the shape is ± pentagonal. Among the forms of leaves we may differentiate between such as petiolated, constrict, elliptic, lanceolate, sitting leaves with contracted base and sitting leaves with broad base. Regarding further the course of veins and the features of flowers, we summarize all known forms in 10 varieties. The diversity of forms in these varieties we have demonstrated, and have described the relationship between the varieties and their features of limitation.
Unfortunately in classifications used till now the nomenclature is not revised. It was necessary to replace some well known names by legitimate ones.
One till now not distinguished variety is described.
