Role of water in by-product formation in the catalytic dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene

Abstract

In the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene over iron oxide catalyst, water vapour provides a catalytic route to by-products. It effects dealkylation of chemisorbed ethylbenzene to benzene and toluene, as well as a secondary transformation of toluene into benzene. Upon replacement of H2O by CO2 or N2 the selectivity of the process increases.
