Conclusions
Foreign companies are producing a large range of converter refractories and bodies. The greatest resistance is possessed by dense, fired and tar-impregnated (pitch) magnesite and dolomite high-purity products.
In some cases the resistance of the working layer of the lining, taking into account guncreting, reaches more than 900 heats. The consumption of refractories is 3–5 kg per ton of steel.
In order to obtain identical resistance throughout all sections of the lining of the converter, by measuring the residual thickness after completion of several campaigns it was possible to determine the degree of wear in the structure, and then to establish the profile (thickness) and choose the brick for the various zones of the lining. In this connection, protective coatings are applied systematically, and the worn-out sections of the hot lining are repaired by guncreting.
Research centers of the companies are studying the influence of production conditions in the converter process, and the properties of products on the resistance of refractory linings.
