Summary
The most important changes that have occurred since 1930 in the way flower bulbs are grown and handled have been shortly described. The following points are discussed: introduction of measures to control production and marketing, improved control of diseases and pests, organization of compulsory inspections both in the field and after harvest, and — mainly after 1950 — a rapid rationalization (mechanization, chemical weed control).
Two examples are given to show how the introduction of a new cultural method may have an unexpected effect on the incidence of a disease or pest. Gladiolus corms often became seriously damaged byTaeniothrips simplex after introduction of a new method of drying the corms after lifting.Botrytis hyacinthi is no longer of great importance since growers adopted the method of storing their planting stocks at higher temperatures.
Next, two examples are discussed where increased damage by certain pathogens (Botrytis tulipae andFusarium oxysporum, both in tulips) must be ascribed to the accumulated effect of several factors that slowly and inconspicuously changed in the course of the years.
