Summary
After a short account of the geovolcanology of the volcano and the most important characteristic climatic factors, the Authoress presents the outlines of the vegetation to be found high up on Asama; she has divided it into three horizons:
-
a)
a Subalpine horizon from the limit of the forest (1,900–1,950 m) to about 2,150 m, which is characterized by theSalix reinii group, composed of shrub vegetation with Ericaceae in prevalence.
-
b)
the Alpine horizon, from between 2,150 and 2,280–2,380 m, characterized by thePolygonum weyrichii v.alpinum group, composed of a few herbaceous species grouped in sparce pioneer clods.
-
c)
the Desert horizon from 2,280–2,380 m to the top (2,542 m), characterized by absence of vegetation, at least limited to the macroscopic species.
In conclusion a table is presented synthetically of the altitudinal distribution of the horizons described, and a brief comparison is made between Mt. Asama and other mountains.
