Action of imidazole and some of its derivatives on nerve-muscle transmission in frog

Abstract

Positive stimulatory action on nerve-muscle transmission for both imidazole and 2-methylimidazole has been shown. The effect of 2-methylimidazole was somewhat lesser in magnitude and slower in appearance than imidazole. 1-Methylimidazole had no effect; depressive action of histamine was demonstrated.

Both imidazole and 2-methylimidazole seem to act at the presynaptic region increasing acetylcholine release and act probably by interrelationship with calcium mechanisms. Possible role of imidazoles as the regulators of free calcium ions is suggested.
