Abstract
In order to jugde the success of an election campaign, two opinion surveys are to be carried out at two different times, each timen people being asked about their opinion with respect to the partyx. Now the question arises whether we should ask the same sample ofn people both times (test of McNemar for the comparison of dependent frequencies) or whether it would be more suitable to carry out the second survey independently of the first one (test for the comparison of independent frequencies). In the present paper we calculate the asymptotic power functions of these two test procedures and derive the asymptotic relative efficiency (ARE).
