Summary
Only few clinical states result from hypersecretion of gastrointestinal hormones: syndromes due to autonomous endocrine tumours or due to antral G-cell hyperplasia. The clinical significance of a lack of gastrointestinal hormones has been proven in diabetes mellitus and in the rare McQuarrie syndrome. The impaired glucose assimilation in chronic pancreatitis and coeliac disease is a.o. the consequence of a diminished GIP release due to reduced food absorption. As far gastrointestinal hormones are involved in the pathogenesis of duodenal ulcer is a matter of controversy.
