Professor Schelsky is professor of sociology at the University of Bielefeld. He is the author of one of the most noteworthy books on the German university:Einsamkeit und Freiheit: Idee und Gestalt der deutschen Universität und iherer Reformen (second enlarged edition) (Düsseldorf: Berteismann Universitätsverlag, 1971.) He has also written major works on German youth (Die skeptische Generation: eine Soziologie der deutschen Jugend (Düsseldorf Koln: Eugen Diederichs Verlag, 1957)) and on the German family in the post-war years (Wandlungen der deutschen Familie in der Gegenwart, 3rd ed. (Stuttgart, 1955)). He is also the author ofAbschied von der Hochschulpolitik: Die Universität im Fadenkreuz des Versagens (Düsseldorf: Berteismann Universitätsverlag, 1969), reviewed inMinerva, X, 3 (July, 1972), pp. 495–498.
