Abstract

We describe a compact, movable system to collect and spatially filter fluorescence excited by laser in a molecular beam. The filter reduces the volume viewed by the detector which enables measuring fluorescence arising from constricted regions, such as from small gaps between electrodes or magnetic pole pieces, and reducing the Doppler width in divergent molecular beams. Indeed, we demonstrate that Doppler widths of 100 MHz can be attained for an unskimmed supersonic beam a few cm downstream from the nozzle where the high molecular density further enhances the fluorescence signal.
