Abstract
The paper gives the results of X-ray measurements of oriented microstresses produced in WC-Co alloys as a consequence of different coefficients of thermal expansivity of both phases. A study of these stresses in samples having a mean WC grain size of 2·2 μ and 3 μ and a content of Co 6–25% (weight) showed that the real structure of alloyed tungstein carbides represents a transition between the two extreme conceptions — the theory of a skeleton and the theory of a colbalt film. A continuous carbide skeleton exists in a WC-Co system only when the Co contents are smaller than about 15%. Above this limit the continuity of the skeleton is lowered and it gradually disintegrates into individual grains surrounded by the binder phase.
