Abstract
The mesons π+-, πℴ and π′ (neutral meson with isotropic spin 0) are described jointly as charge states of a single pion the isotropic spin of which may be 1 and 0. The fundamental equations of the pion field interacting with the electromagnetic and the nucleon fields are formulated. The Hamiltonian describing the interaction of the pion field with the nucleon field is limited only by the requirement of the conservation of charge. Symmetrical and other kinds of coupling are special cases. From the Hamiltonian, the pion-nucleon scattering matrix is deduced.
