Summary
From 1972 till 1974 data on the living conditions of Audouin's GullLarus audouinii (=A.) were collected at its breeding colonies and resting places in Spain, Turkey and on Sardinia.
The whole population consists of about 600–800 breeding-pairs; colonies are known from the Mediterranean only.
Egg-laying starts in mid-April, 6–7 weeks later than the Mediterranean Herring Gull,Larus argentatus michahellis (=M.). The time-interval between egglaying and hatching was 29.8 days for the first (n=11), 27.8 days for the second (n=8) and 27.0 days for the third egg (n=6). The average of 28.5 days (n=25) is longer than that of the Herring Gull (28.2 days) although the latter lays bigger eggs (71.4×49.3 mm) than A. (64.0×44.0 mm; n=65). The interval between the laying of the first and the third egg averages 4.1 days and the hatching interval 1.7 days. A clutch consists of 1–3 eggs (\(\bar x = 2.2\) eggs in 1972, 2.5 eggs in 1973, 2.3 eggs in 1974). Out of 65 eggs 33 hatched in 1974.
The development of weight, growth and plumage on wild and 3 captive chicks was observed. Just hatched chicks weigh 46 g (n=13); from the 4th till the 35th day their weight increased by 20–26 g per day and reached a maximum after 40 days that is approximately 20% above the final weight of 500–600 g.
Downs and juvenile plumage of A. are darker than those of M. In the third year the plumage of A. is almost identical with the adult plumage. In mid-winter A. start the moult of the contour-feathers, in May begins the moult of rectrices and remiges together with contour-feathers which can last till October.
The analysis of 1005 droppings and 31 pellets shows that A. feed on a variety of food: human waste, plant matter, insects (1/5 mole-cricket, beetle and locust each, 2/5 ants), mice, and squid but mainly fish. The percentages of the different food-items vary individually and seasonally.
A.'s method of catching fish is unique among gulls and is used with much success in the Mediterranean during summer, when the sea is calm. Fishing A. were only met in the vicinity of the coast or islands. On land A. foraged mostly on fallow land and harvested fields.
The polyphage feeding of A. and its simultaneous specialisation on catching fish is discussed. A.'s feeding and breeding ecology is compared with that of M. A.'s breeding restriction to the Mediterranean and the causes of its small numbers are discussed as well as the effects of environmental changes on A.'s living conditions and proposals for protection and management.
