Summary
The annual cycle of song activity according toAlexander (1935) and data compiled byBezzel (unpublished data) are compared with the annual course of testosterone plasma levels in free-living male Great Tits ascertained byRöhss &Silverin (1983). In Great Tit ♂ the seasonal course of both, song activity and testosterone levels show two peaks (one in spring and a second one in late summer) and run parallel to one another throughout the year. The increase of testosterone values in late summer is almost exclusively caused by juvenile birds; this can probably also be said of the higher song activity at the same time of the season.
The results are compared to findings obtained in Marsh and Willow Tits (Rost unpubl.) and with recent data regarding the influence of testosterone and oestradiol on song acquisition, song development and production of full song (Marler et al. 1988). Suggestions for further investigations are made.
