Problems in the serological diagnosis of Candida infections

Summary

The appearance of serum antibodies against Candida albicans was examined in patients suffering from superficial and systemic candidamycosis as well as in patients suffering from cutaneous disorders without Candida infection. Parallel studies were performed in order to demonstrate agglutinating, complement-fixing and precipitating antibodies against whole antigens and antigenic fractions of Candida albicans.

On the basis of 58 investigated serum specimens it was found that Candida antibodies in significant titers developed mainly in patients suffering from Candida infections. The titers obtained in the various reactions showed, however, only a partial concordance. The possible reasons for this are discussed.

Under the present conditions it appears advisable to use at least two different serum reactions simultaneously in the study of Candida antibodies and to observe the course of titers in intervals of 2–3 weeks.
