Modulational instability of elliptically polarized transverse electromagnetic wave in a cold plasma

Abstract

Modulational instability of an elliptically polarized transverse wave in a cold plasma is investigated by the use of Whitham's method of averaged Lagrangian including relativistic corrections. Instability condition and amplitude dependent frequency shift are derived.
