The expression ofI-region gene products on lymphocytes

II. Genetic localization and cellular distribution of MLR determinants

Abstract

MLR reactivity of lymphocytes from a large number of strain combinations, devised to differ for restricted regions of theH-2 complex, was studied. The reactivities of T and B stimulator cells were compared. It was found that genes for MLR determinants controlling T-and B-cell antigens are distributed along practically the wholeH-2 complex. In all regions, with the exception of theI-C subregion, B cells were found to be stronger stimulators than T cells. The strongest MLR-stimulating antigens were controlled by genes clustering in theI-A andI-B subregions. Consistent correlation was found between Ia incompatibility and MLR reactivity in allI-region-different combinations, suggesting that the Ia antigens may be identical to the MLR-stimulating antigens.
