The optimization of a toroid shape with respect to the tension acting on a turn yields a shape similar to the letter D. This mechanical optimum corresponds with the optimum intrinsic energy of a given length of wire in a toroidal construction. Provided idealized field distribution, these facts have been described before. In the present paper exact semi-analytic methods for field calculation are given. They require a relatively small computing time. A new numerical algorithm for optimization of the shape with respect to the tension is developed. Furthermore a method to determine inductance coefficients of toroidal arrangements is described.
