Lymphocytic choriomeningitis in the mouse

II. Establishment of carrier colonies

Summary

Conditions for establishing carrier colonies for Armstrong and WE strains of LCM virus have been determined. When 1000 ID50 of virus are administered i. c. within 24 hours of birth, most mice succumb to the disease. In contrast, a significantly larger proportion tolerates well the i. p. inoculation of very large amounts of virus (107 and 109 ID50 for Armstrong and WE respectively). As a rule, these animals carry the virus for many months afterwards; only exceptionally does the virus in their blood fall to undetectable levels. Viraemic female mice transfer the virus to their offspring with an efficiency close to 100%.
