Some general properties of the measles virus hemolysin

Summary

The general properties of the measles virus hemolysin have been studied. Hemagglutination seems to be a necessary prerequisite for hemolysis, although the two activities can be differentiated by such means as ether treatment and thermal inactivation. Generally, hemagglutinin shows greater stability than hemolysin which in turn is more thermostable than virus infectivity. Furthermore, no hemolysis takes place below 15° C although there still is an agglutination of red cells below this temperature. pH optimum for hemolysis is around pH 8.0 and activity appears from pH 5.6 to 10.0. Ca2+ has a marked inhibiting effect upon hemolysis in concentrations up to 10−3 M. Above this concentration the effect is reversed and there is a gradual reduction of the degree of inhibition. No similar effects were found with Mg2+ and Sr2+. The measles virus hemolysin thus exhibits many properties similar to those which have been described for the hemolysin of large myxoviruses. However, RDE treatment of cells does not affect their susceptibility to measles virus hemagglutination or hemolysis.
