Summary

Soluble basic pigment derivatives are well adsorbed from both aqueous acetic acid solutions and from nonaqueous solvents on a variety of pigment substrates. The deflocculating action of these and less soluble basic derivatives on finely divided pigments is due to hydrogen bonding between the basic groups and acidic hydrogen atoms in the film forming binders in the paint. This conclusion is supported by adsorption isotherms, cryoscopic, infra-red and deflocculation tests.
