Using silicic acid sol for obtaining aqueous ceramicbinder (Cement) suspensions of quartz glass

Conclusions

Using the silicic acid sol as a dispersing medium permits one to obtain aqueous ceramicbinder suspensions (ACBS) within a period of 7 h by wet grinding (mechanochemical activation) of the fused quartz particles.

Based on the experimental ACBS with a volume fraction of the solid phase up to 0.71, we obtained specimens having an open porosity of 16.8% and an ultimate bend strength of 12.0 MPa after structure formation and hardening.

It was established that the ACBS specimens made from fused quartz do not soften in the 110–1100°C range.

The investigated suspensions can be used as effective binding agents for the unburnt (unfired) products and also as coatings and mortars.
