Summary

The density of simple aqueous solutions may be measured with precision using the mechanical oscillator technique. When viscous solutions of phosphated nonylphenol ethoxylate (PNE) and phosphated fatty alcohol ethoxylate (PFE) in n-hexane, or in mixtures of n-hexane and water, are measured on the instrument anomalous results are obtained. These results are discussed in the light of anomalies previously observed in the equilibrium phase diagrams involving the ordered association of these four components. When the instrument is applied to systems identified as laminar phase liquid crystal there is no response and this may be due to the rheological properties of these materials.
