Summary

The viscosity and normal stresses are investigated for a semi-stiff chain polymer, the polyterephthalamide of p-amino-benzhydrazide, as a function of coincentration and shear rate in dilute solution. The results are interpreted in terms of entanglement formation and a shear induced mesophase transition. The ability of this polymer to form ultra-high modulus fibers is thought to be related to such a shear induced mesophase which occurs during the fiber spinning process.
