Summary
It is shown that the description of heterogeneous systems has to be divided into separate treatments for extreme cases.
For dispersions where one phase is dispersed as discrete particles in the second, which is a continuous matrix, the theory ofBruggeman can be applied successfully. For real mixtures, where the phases are geometrically equivalent and distributed at random a new theory has been developed; using the concept of the equivalent volume element containing a number of unit cells.
With the aid of this theory experimental results with widely different heterogeneous systems can be explained; in particular the dynamic modulus of carbon black loaded rubber and fats at high concentrations of the solids can be fully understood.
