Part XV. Influence of non-electrolytes on the coagulation of hydrous ferric oxide sol by potassium nitrate

Summary

The coagulation of positively charged sol of hydrous ferric oxide of different average particle sizes by potassium nitrate has been studied. Sensitisation has been observed for ethyl alcohol, acetone and gelatin whilst stabilisation occurs for glucose and urea. The extent of sensitisation decreases with the progress of time whilst the reverse happens in stabilisation. The degree of sensitisation or stabilisation increases with the fineness of dispersed particles. It has been concluded that the adhesive tendency of the surface of dispersed particles is modified in the presence of nonelectrolytes.

Zusammenfassung

Die Koagulation positiv geladener Sole von wäßrigem Eisenoxid verschiedener mittlerer Partikelgröße durch Kaliumnitrat läßt Sensibilisierung durch Äthylalkohol, Aceton und Gelatine beobachten, während sich für Glukose und Harnstoff Stabilisierung ergibt. Die Sensibilisierung nimmt im Laufe der Zeit ab, während die Stabilisierung steigt. Der Grad der Sensibilisierung wächst mit der Feinheit der Partikel. Es folgt, daß die Adhäsionstendenz der Oberflächen der dispersen Teilchen durch die Gegenwart von Elektrolyten modifiziert wird.
