Abstract
By means of X-Ray- and neutron wide-angle diffraction in molten alloys of the system Fe−C intensity curves were obtained, from which atomic distribution functions could be deduced. From these results, together with results of ultrasound-velocity-measurements, follows the structural behaviour of molten Fe−C alloys in dependency of C-concentration. Increasing C concentration (up to 1.8w/0) causes a higher packing density of the melts because of increasing nearest neighbours distance and number. Above 1.8w/0 C the distance and above 3w/0 up to 5.5w/0 the number of nearest neighbours remains constant. (The upper limit of the concentration range under investigation was 5.5w/0 C.)
Furthermore, the existence of inhomogeneities in melts above 3.5w/0 C can be deduced from ultrasound velocity measurements.
