Abstract
Resonant absorption of ultrasonic waves by narrow bands of open-orbit electrons can be used as a tool for the study of electron lifetimes. Explicit model calculations of resonance line shapes are difficult because of the complexity of the electron-lattice interaction. Experimental evidence regarding the nature of the interaction has been obtained by studying open-orbit resonances in the noble metals for shear waves propagating along different symmetry directions with various polarizations.
