Summary
-
1.
Esterase activity against p-nitrophenyl propionate in the kidneys of 100 male mice and 100 female mice was quantitatively estimated in relation to age. The enzyme distribution in corresponding histochemical preparations was concurrently investigated.
-
2.
Despite the different methods employed, the results agree to some degree.
-
3.
Specific enzyme activity, i. e. that related to protein content, increases steadily from birth up to the 25th day, at which time it reaches five times the original value. An intermediate enzyme distribution is formed independently of sex.
The increase in enzyme activity is initially correlated to differentiation in the nephron, and from the 15th day onward to maturation in the tubulus cells.
-
4.
Beginning about the 25th day, sexual hormones take over control of enzyme activity in male animals. In this second phase of chemo-differentiation, enzyme activity again rises about fivefold. Again, the cause seems to be principally differentiation processes in the primary portion of the proximal tubules.
-
5.
In adult animals, the female enzyme distribution pattern corresponds to the sex-independent intermediate type. The intermediate types are therefore different, depending on age.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
