Abstract
The interaction of a 633 nm He-Ne laser with a magnetically tuned Ne gas absorber, placed outside the laser, is investigated. The investigations are performed in the Faraday geometry with the laser free running and mode-locked. The free running laser mode-crossings are compared with the mode-crossings induced by the laser mode-locked on three modes. Zero-field level-crossings induced by the laser in single-mode operation are compared with the multimode crossings. It is found that the multimode crossings, even in the locked three-mode case, do not show up as two overlapping resonances as the zero-field level-crossing does in the single-mode case. The consequences of multimode laser interactions to magneto-optic effects are discussed.
