Conclusions
-
1.
Slackening of the fit of the support bushing of overhung units can lead to the occurrence of nonperpendicularity of the shafting of the unit and support of the thrust bearing, to the occurrence of cyclic stresses, and to fatigue failure of structural elements.
-
2.
One of the signs of slackening is the presence of contact corrosion products (brown powder) on the mated surfaces of the bushing, shaft, and fastening ring.
-
3.
When repairing units it is necessary, along with the classical methods of checking the centering and shafting, to check the tightness of the fit of the support bushing and in doubtful cases to check the absence of oscillations of the bushing on the shaft.
-
4.
The tightness of the fit of the support bushing of the thrust bearing should be restored by surfacing with copper with subsequent grooving.
