Abstract

A crisis developed in a small, southern, rural community when several 6-year-old children mysteriously began falling asleep in a first-grade classroom of one of the schools. During this widely publicized crisis physicians, public health officials, education administrators, and psychologists were called in for consultation on the sleeping epidemic. The psychological factors involved and the treatment program for the situation are described. The role of the consultant in dealing with the community crisis is presented as an example of crisis intervention.
