Summary
DNA synthesis was investigated by visualizing sites of bromodeoxyuridine incorporation with antibodies in protonemata of the mossFunaria hygrometrica. In apically elongating tip cells a pronounced gradient of organelle DNA synthesis from tip to base was visible, reflecting the distribution of proliferating organelles within the tip cell. Side branch development coincided with reinitiation of replication of plastid and mitochondrial DNA.
