Fungi associated with the seedling roots ofAllium porrum L.

Plant and Soil Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

Data is provided on the fungi isolated from the roots ofAllium porrum which have been grown in three soils. These data show that the roots support a typical root-surface mycoflora, although this is more sparse than that recorded for several other Angiosperm roots.

The results indicate that, as suggested by Peterson3, soil pH influences the association of saprophytic fungi with plant roots. Species of Cylindrocarpon, Fusarium, Mortierella and Gliocladium are fungi which seem to be most affected in this respect.

The need for detailed studies on the biology of individual species, which frequently occur in close association with plant roots, is emphasized.
