The influence of the channeling effect on the luminescence of NaCl single crystals under ion bombardment

Abstract

Channeling of 10–50 keV noble gas ions in NaCl single crystals was studied by measuring the luminescent response of crystals as a function of the angle of incidence with respect to 〈100〉, 〈110〉 axial and {100} planar directions. Pronounced peaks could be detected if the ion beam was well aligned with low index directions. A description of peak heights versus ion atomic numberZ 1 was given in terms of nuclear and electronic stopping cross sections. The increase of luminescent response in channeling directions can be explained by the strong decrease of nuclear stopping that dominates the energy loss at low ion energies in amorphous targets and in random directions in crystals. An additional influence of the channeling effect on the mechanism of energy conversion is discussed.
