Summary
The exploitation of raised bogs in Ireland for fuel and the consequent exposure of many acres of shallow peat poses a number of microbiological problems. A description is given of some aspects of the microbial ecology of uncut bogs and cutaway peatland. The use of several proven complementary methods has shown that cut-away peat is not rapidly colonized by a diversity of micro-organisms which finding is of significance in planning the future reclamation of this potential agricultural land.
