Summary

In principle, incremental constitutive equations are linear relations between a convenient stress rate and the strain rate tensor. These linear relations depend on the strain and the stress history as well as on criteria for cases of loading and unloading. The concept of incremental constitutive equations, which is discussed in this paper, includes a wide class of possibilities to describe inelastic material properties in the sense of viscoelastic and plastic behaviors. Moreover, coupled viscoelastic-plastic phenomena can be represented.

Essentially, incremental formulations of constitutive assumptions can be understood as a particular realization of the principles of determinism and objectivity.
