Abstract
Np239 sources, prepared in different chemical states, were exposed to a high electrostatic field (≈107 V/cm).L subshell conversion electrons of the 57.2 keV transition were studied in a high resolution double focussing spectrometer. It was found that large shifts (≈100 eV) of theL 3 binding energy can be induced by the action of the field, while theL 2 binding energy remains practically unchanged. The binding energy shifts depend on the chemical state of the source. Shifts are observed when chloride and oxide source are used. With hydroxide sources no shifts were observed.
