Absolute determination ofL III-binding energy in nickel from self-absorption measurements

Abstract

L α emission band spectra of Ni are measured for different, very low energies of the exciting electrons. The energetic positions of the bandmaxima are discussed and a detailed comparison with the statements of other authors is carried out. The theory of the self-absorption difference spectra (SADS) as a new precision method for the absolute determination of binding energies is developed and applied to the binding energy ε LM of the Ni-L III-level. The new value ε LM = 851.8 ± 0.2 ev agrees exactly with the value calculated for bulk Ni by Shirley et al. 1977.
