Conclusions
An investigation was carried out of the interaction of a phosphate-bonded rammed zirconia compound with molten stainless steel in the presence of (U, Pu)O2.
Trials were carried out under the conditions obtaining in the thermal stripping of oxide fuel elements with a steel shell of a melting and separating unit with a concrete-lined induction coil and a rammed crucible of stabilized zirconia with a binder in the form of orthophosphoric acid.
The constructional integrity of the unit remained intact after 75 cycles of thermal stripping. The durability of the unit depends on the thermal strength of the concrete lining of the induction coil and the fused layer of the crucible and on the extent to which the ferrous slag enters the material of the rammed crucible.
