Abstract
We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements, performed to study the influence of the concentration of rate earth ions on the excitation spectra, which are caused by crystal electric field splitting. For this purpose we have chosen the cubic Laves phase alloys RE c R1−c Al2,c≦0.15, with RE=Tb, Ho, Er and Tm and the nonmagnetic atoms R=La, Y, and Sc. In some cases we observe drastic changes of the excitation spectra even in the percentage range of concentration. This underlines the necessity to perform inelastic neutron scattering experiments on very diluted samples. Only then single ion crystal field parameters can be deduced directly from the excitation spectra without taking additional interaction effects into account. The origin of the observed concentration effects will be discussed qualitatively.
