Summary
In leaf cells ofElodea nuttallii which contain little or no oxalate crystals such crystals develop after plasmolysis and deplasmolysis. The major part of crystals is formed during and after deplasmolysis; plasmolysis has an influence in so far as the number of those precipitated during plasmolysis as well as the total number increases with the duration of plasmolysis. Evidently in each cell a certain amount only of calcium oxalate depending among other things on the age of the leaves can be precipitated.
After preliminary treatment with potassium citrate or EDTA only few crystals are formed; adding these substances to the plasmolysing solution gives the same results. Precipitation does not occur if water containing very little Ca is used; if during deplasmolysis Ca is present the amount of oxalate precipitated depends on the Ca concentration.
